Planning a Narrow Watch Workshop

The existing premises were narrow and elongated, with the entrance to the watchmakers’ work area positioned off-centre within the wall. This created a noticeable visual imbalance and further emphasised the challenging proportions of the space.

The layout was therefore arranged as a sequence of interconnected zones: the entrance and client area lead to the reception desk and display cases, followed by the watchmakers’ workspaces at the rear. This linear approach makes efficient use of the limited floor area, keeps circulation clear and creates a natural transition between the public and technical areas.

A Counter Designed for Conversations with the Watchmaker

In practice, many clients prefer to remain standing at the counter while speaking face-to-face with the watchmaker. This makes the interaction feel direct and natural: clients can hand over their watch, describe the issue in detail, ask questions about the repair and discuss the intricacies of its movement.

The counter therefore became one of the key functional elements of the interior. It is designed for comfortable conversations while standing and creates an appropriate boundary between the customer-facing and working areas.

For visitors who prefer to sit, or whose consultation requires more time, a seated area is provided beside the reception desk. This allows the workshop to accommodate different service scenarios and individual client preferences.

Using Mirrors to Visually Widen the Space

Large mirrored surfaces were introduced to correct the proportions of the long, narrow room. By reflecting light, display cases and furnishings, they make the interior feel wider, brighter and deeper.

The mirrors also helped resolve the visual imbalance caused by the off-centre entrance to the workshop area. Framed by mirrored surfaces and bamboo panels, the doorway appears centrally positioned within the composition. As a result, the interior feels balanced, cohesive and symmetrical, even though the actual location of the entrance remains unchanged.

Materials and Interior Character

The material palette combines light finishes, warm natural wood tones, bamboo panels, mirrors, glass and understated metallic accents. The warmth of the wood softens the professional setting, while the glass and mirrored elements add depth and visual lightness.

The watch display cases are integrated into the overall architectural composition. Their transparency prevents them from overwhelming the narrow space, while carefully positioned lighting highlights the craftsmanship and fine details of the watches on display.

Circular pendant lights echo the shape of watch dials, creating a subtle connection to the purpose of the workshop. Classical wall mouldings are balanced with contemporary furniture and clean-lined lighting. The result is a timeless interior that feels elegant, sophisticated and appropriate for a luxury watch repair service.
